Veterinarians use this drug as a anesthetic on pets but is used as a party drug known as "special K".  The patient must have "treatment-resistant to other antidepressant medications  and in 2-4 weeks after a single dose of the medication the patient shows marked improvements.   71 percent of the patient who tried Ketamine responded as opposed to those on a placebo.  Relief of most symptoms of depression lasted seven to ten days. Ecstasy also may help depression. In the journal of  Archives of General Psychiatry carried out a controlled trial of the ketamine  and it showed promise to help patients deal with bipolar depression.
